Welcome to the Home of the Panthers. Thank you for your interest in Rilke Schule, a German Immersion Charter School in the Anchorage School District. Unlike all other immersion schools in Anchorage, all students attending our school are immersed in the foreign language and culture, and that learning is reinforced throughout the curriculum in non-German subjects as well.
The German Government has recognized Rilke Schule as a German Immersion School Abroad. Furthermore, Rilke Schule is a member of the initiative "Schools: Partners for the Future" (Schule: Partner der Zukunft; short PASCH). For this recognition and membership Rilke Schule receives annual financial support from the German Government.
If you are looking for a school for your child or are a new student, please visit the Prospective Parents page. It lists answers to many common questions. For any further questions, please contact the school office at 742-7455 or send an e-mail to info@rilkeschule.org.
NEW SCHOOL HOURS FOR 2009-2010 We are excited to announce that there will be changes to the Rilke Schule schedule for the 2009-2010 school year.
We
have received approval from the Teacher’s Union and the Anchorage
School District to implement a plan next year that was in our original
charter. We will have school from 8:15am-3:00pm Monday through
Thursday, and from 8:15am-1:30pm on Fridays. In a language
immersion teaching environment, it is crucial to give teaching teams
the opportunity to plan curriculum together. At Rilke Schule, each
class has an English and a German teacher and it is essential that
these teaching teams receive weekly joint planning time. The curriculum
must be fine-tuned to achieve reinforcement of concepts that apply to
both languages (i.e. teaching American and German monetary units), to
avoid duplication of efforts, and to ensure that all mandatory
curriculum units are sufficiently covered.
The primary purpose
of this Friday early release time will be to provide teachers with this
needed planning time. An additional benefit of this schedule will be to
give families the choice of an early start on the weekend or an
"Optional Intensive" learning experience on Friday afternoon. The
Optional Intensive programs will have a minimal fee to cover expenses.
Students who remain at school until 3pm on Friday will have the
opportunity to participate in activities such as Russian, soccer, art,
choir, folk dancing, scrap booking, etc. Homework club and other after
school activities will remain in effect. Interested members of the
Rilke Schule Community, other than our teachers, will teach the
‘Optional Intensives’ program.
If you are interested in helping with this program, please send an email to Jo Sanders (frausanders@alaska.com) or the school (info@rilkeschule.org) with your ideas. We will keep you informed of plans for this program as they develop during the summer.
