Home of the Panthers

Rilke Schule is still enrolling students grades K - 8 (there is a wait list for 2nd grade). Please call the school for more information or to schedule a tour. You are also invited to our Open House (Tuesday, 9/16/08, 7pm - 8:30pm).

*  We made the grade! Rilke Schule made AYP (Adequate Yearly Progress) in its first year of operation. More than 95% of our students that were tested were proficient in language arts and 82% were proficient in Math.

* Rilke Schule has officially been recognized by and is receiving some financial support from the German government.

* Uniqueness: The entire school (ALL students, faculty, and staff) participates in the immersion into the German language and culture and the program spans elementary and middle school.

* Learning a foreign language develops basic skills such as communication, listening, and memory and is beneficial for your child’s English language development.

* Rilke Schule has had the pleasure to host 7 native German education major interns so far through a wonderful organization called Amity. Having native German speakers volunteer in our classroom is a great benefit to our students.

* We celebrate major German holidays and traditions. For example, the students build lanterns in November for our annual lantern walk (St. Martin).

* Rilke Schule has two partner schools in Leverkusen and Eiselfing, Germany. Rilke students have the opportunity to develop friendships with pen/e-mail pals and the upper grades can participate in an annual exchange program.

* Adult German classes are offered in the evenings for parents and community members who want to learn along or are interested in the German language.

*New Traffic Pattern*

Please review the changes below. They are effective immediately. We hope this will improve the safely and timeliness of the Drop Off/Pick Up procedures.     Drop Off Time: 7:50-8:15 AM
Pick Up Time:  2:45-3:00 PM

PROCEDURES for DRIVE-THROUGH DROP OFF/PICK UP                                    Go past the parking lot to make a U-turn on 53rd & join the end of the line - do not use Rilke parking lot to turn around in for drive-through as originally posted.  Line up east of AK Housing (do not block any part of their driveway & do watch for delivery trucks). Please drive forward when flagged ahead. Pull as far forward as you can, being sure to not block the crosswalk. You may want to turn your wheels outward so you can leave without backing up.                           ****Be aware of backing up, there may be a child behind you****                Do not back into crosswalk. Students need to load and unload on the passenger side of the vehicle only.                                                                        Please post the name and grade(s) of student(s) in your passenger side window so they can be called more quickly from their lines.                                 Please stay in your car when you are in the pick-up zone, it helps traffic flow.

PROCEDURES FOR PARKING DURING DROP OFF AND PICKUP                               Please use the parking lot on 53rd if you would like to park to pick up your child.  The parking lot on International is for teachers only.                                Please be courteous to our neighbors.  Do not park across the street from the school. Do not block any business or residential driveways. Do not park on any other businesses property.                                                                   Enter the parking lot near the crosswalk and exit near the fire hydrant. Use the crosswalk when crossing the street, watching for crossing guard signals.        The 4 farthest east front row parking spaces are reserved for activity buses from 2:15-3:15 PM.

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS                                                                         Please do not let your children (school age OR siblings) play on the playground structure between 2:45 and 3:00 PM while other children are waiting in line. The teachers can't watch any stray children that are tempted to wander over and join them.                                                                                          Please do not conference with your child's teacher at pickup time, except to  arrange for a time. The teachers need to be helping the volunteers by listening for the kids names to be called.                                                              The district would like us to remind you to arrive shortly before 2:45 for Pick Up to keep the road clear in case of an emergency. This also will shorten your wait time.                                                                                                While we understand that pick up seems to take a long time, it only takes approximately 15 minutes which is about standard for the other Anchorage schools. We ask for your patience as we try to make things go as quickly as possible while keeping everyone safe. The traffic volunteers are parent volunteers who are just trying to keep things moving and safe. Please watch for them and listen to them.  They may see a safety problem that you can not see.

THANK YOU!!

Rilke Schule Grand Opening Thank You

The Grand Opening of our school was a wonderful celebration and the APC would like to thank everybody who helped! The students performed with enthusiasm and gusto, the school was beautifully decorated, and the food was delicious. It was great to celebrate with so many people who have helped our school get started.

The recognition of our school by the German Government is highly appreciated and it was an honor to welcome the German delegation at our school - the German Consul General Rolf Schütte, the director of ZfA Frank Müller, and the ZfA German Language Coordinator Elke Rühl.

Calling for Grand Opening Guest Book entries

Only a handful of people signed our guest book that we had prepared for our Grand Opening. It would mean a lot to us if you could share some comments and thoughts with us. If you attended our Grand Opening, we invite you to send them in an e-mail to info@rilkeschule.org. Or you can sign the guest book next time you come to school. Either way, Carrie Ross will collect all entries and assemble them in a guest book that will be a lasting memory for Rilke Schule.

We thank you so much for being part of our Grand Opening and we look forward to reading your guest book entries. __________________________________________________________________

Plans for a Rilke Schule Band

Our music teacher, Herr Downie, is working on finalizing his plans for a school band. The plans are still tentative at this time, but we are excited and want to share the information with you: The band, open to grades 5 through 8, would begin to meet the second week of October every Monday and Wednesday morning from 7:30am to 8:15am. In November, the band will also be open to intermediate students who played last year with the Anchorage School of Music. More information will be posted as it becomes available.

YEARBOOK PICTURES FROM LAST YEAR

The photos that were available for last year's yearbook turned out to be low resolution thumbnails. If you have high resolution pictures from last year that can be used in the yearbook, please put them on a disk (do not email) and bring them to the school for Terri to use.  The yearbook will be sent to the printer September 30th, with our without better quality pictures.  If you want a quality yearbook for the money you've already paid, please help by providing pictures to be included. Thanks very much.

The school needs daytime help with midday recess and lunch. Below is the recess schedule. Soon, it will be too cold for one person to be outside for two hours.
